A Chat with Scott Stratten About Getting Results from Twitter in 2012

Scott Stratten was cool enough to have a brief conversation with the author today about Getting the most out of Twitter. There are a couple of gems in his simple advice that remind us to keep social interaction in focus on social media.

Who Is This Scott Stratten Guy?

Scott is on the list of most influential Twitter users in the world #3 on Dun and Bradstreet’s List: the Most Influential Small Business People on Twitter . He Runs the Firm Unmarketing and wrote the Bestselling book of the same name. He is also a mean Karaoke singer, a dad, and an all around nice guy.

Amazing that one of the top twitter personalities in the world spends most of his time on twitter responding to @ messages. even though he has plenty to tweet about in self promotion, between speaking gigs, book tour events, the new version of his book coming out soon and general musings see what he has to say below it may inspire you to think differently about your social media involvement.

Imagine you sell men’s grooming products. You want to boost sales before the holiday but don’t have a sizeable footprint in the market and want to reach more men who require grooming.

Sounds daunting but challenges like this are overcome every single day. The trick is to find a niche community of web users who are already engaged around a topic and join in the fray.

This month you should be active in the #movember hashtag that stands for Mustache November and has 6.9Million page results on Google for “movember” related content. Get involved in that content stream and you could be the coolest purveyor of mustache wax on twitter and facebook.

Being the coolest also means being valuable to the #mo-growers that are raising awareness for prostate cancer. The strategy must be fully fleshed out. Not just “tweet on the #movember hashtag”

Do not just spam the hashtag

Spend the time and build real content and real relationships. You will get more traction out of answering some questions and being a genuine human than you will link spamming the hashtag. Your first posts in a hashtag are building context for your links to your own content later. But when you link make it stuff that is actually helpful to the other members of the hash tag.

Develop Specific Content for the theme of the hashtag

  • Instructional video on how to properly wax your mustache.
  • Info graphic that shows a variety of different mustache shapes and how to trim them.
  • A Flickr photo set of the top 10 manliest mustache wearers of the modern age.
  • Build a facebook and twitter sharing tool that will allow guys to tweet abouth their support of #movember linking to a photo of the style of mustache they are growing.

Develop a Sales Strategy in Parallel with the hashtag activity

Run a promotion that a percentage of sales of mustache grooming gear from your co purchase in November will go to fund prostate cancer research via #movember
Allow users to tweet or facebook post after purchase that they just bought mustache grooming products and that $X.XX of their purchase is going to support prostate cancer #movember.

This is a full on strategy for leveraging a hashtag. Don’t think the hashtag you are looking at is worth that much effort? Then pick a better hash tag or watch your competitors lambaste you in mustache wearing victory!

Sure they were Bikers and they wanted to go to a bike show, but the social traction gained by connecting to that larger issue massively improved the pre and post-show sharing. Following the event the tagline “Because They Died We Still Ride” continued to circulate the web.

How 1 Tweet Generated National News Coverage for Small Company in less than 24 hours…

Allison Jo Winter of Terra Companies didn’t expect that attending a twitter training seminar would lead to national news exposure less than 24 hours later but…

Tuesday night Allison Jo Winter of Terra Companies attended the Twitter for Small Business seminar 2 the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce, @kzoochamber,  Included in the discussion was reaching local media with twitter and using Twitter to drive traffic to Youtube content. Less than 24 hours and 10 tweets later Allison’s Twitter account @terracompanies had drawn attention to their companies with this tweet about the’r patented sedvac system on the twitter hashtag #bpspill and #BPoilspill

This one tweet drew attention from a local Fox affiliate, a few hours later a complete on site interview with CEO Steve Taplin was mixed with HD video shot for youtube by Terra Companies showcasing the Sedvac system.

By 7pm the story made it to The Chicago Tribune and by 10pm the story was on the nightly news with a 2:21 news segment.

Rewind Just 24 hours and Allison sat in a Twittter Seminar asking how she could get relevance and measurable value from Twitter. The Key points we discussed were:

  1. Compose Tweets that connect “Trending Topics” to your brand (immediately she thought how can we talk about the BP oil spill)
  2. Re-Tweet Something that your target influencers have posted on twitter so that they recognize you.
  3. Link your tweets to more detailed content that goes beyond twitter to Youtube or a company website for brief but specific details.

Leverage your network ask the people you are connected to for input, get strategic help solving problems from the people you interact with on social media and your social network will respond by asking you for help when it’s appropriate also.

Thank your Supporters…regularly. in the social media sphere a thank you is one of the quickest ways to deepen the relationship you have between you and your followers. so do it often. make a point to a little time each week and thank someone for a retweet, send a shout out about something you worked on together anything you can to show some digital gratitude.

Ok so it’s not Shrek talking but the point is clear.keep one voice. don’t try to change the way you talk from one contact to another on social media it will make all of your communication sound manipulative instead of Genuine. the last thing you need is your fans recognizing that you ar trying to sound like them instead of sounding like you.

5. Well, the stars don’t tell the future, donkey, they tell stories. Look, there’s Blood-Nut, the Flatulent. You can guess what he’s famous for.

Always have interesting content. when people never know what you are going to say next they tend to listen more closely to what you say so keep it interesting. mix it up.

Look back at your historical use of Social media. and see what have people re-tweeted/ what got the most comments? what keywords appear most often in your social content? Then look for the consistency in messaging style and content get the mix right any you can be more like Shrek driving fans to tweet, search, and purchase from your brand.

Marketers Say Email is Delivering Better than Social Networking

The “Marketing Profs Digital Marketing Fact Book” shows that by and large most marketing professionals say that email is outperforming social media two to one. I say of course it is because social networking should be driving people to your email lists. See the results and read more below!

  • Search marketing delivers the best results (33%); search and email still constitute the core of a solid online media plan.
  • Nearly everyone uses email, and this medium is repeatedly ranked as one of the most cost-effective (and effective) forms of marketing. Elsewhere in the Factbook, almost 50% of 623 email marketers report that sending emails at midday (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) is the best time of day to do so. The start of the business day (6 a.m. to 10 a.m.) is considered second best at 31.5
  • Mobile marketing is barely on the radar; it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next few years with mobile.

OK so lets review the data, of course Email and Search are still huge! but does that mean social media is less important? That’s a big fat NO and here is why.

Social Media has the capacity to drive new contacts in realtime into your email lists. that’s it. end of discussion. social media is for relationship and trust building of course you will see higher direct revenue from email. but if you look list building via Facebook, Twitter, and other social media is far faster than any other format. (of course that’s only if you contribute content that is worth something but that’s a secondary issue.

look at the bottom line if you can drive growth for free—I repeat drive GROWTH for FREE and quickly via social media then it needs to be a key part of your strategy. Email and search are of course critical and have driven the Internet for years. you must do all of the above. Remember the process your goal in marketing is to move people into the seat of loyal customers and fans.

Social media connects you to new people who can be added to your email list and therefore the results will actually show as an email result in most cases. but I can without spending a dime gain roughly 50 to 100 new followers everyday on twitter. Then I can get about 30% of those followers to join my mailing lists via quality squeeze pages. You need to be doing the same! The results will be more sales from your email list. The social networks lead to bigger email lists. So remember to work the mix don’t depend on social media as the silver bullet strategy. Do remember that utilizing Social Networks and Social media for rapid list growth is cheap, easy, and worth pursuing!

My key takeaway here, if Bing begins to index Twitter and Facebook status updates it will make the value of micro blogging even higher in developing link relevancy and inbound link volume for search marketers.

Look for the near future to include leveraging twitter and Facebook conversation streams as part of your overall search strategy.

Ok here’s my two cents:

Social Media like Twitter, Face Book, MySpace, et all do allow for self indulgent commenting and posting that is of zero value as individual posts. As well they foster often annoying and obnoxious self promotion.

However lets not throw the baby out with the bath water these media are designed for free information exchange and probably more than ever have created the capacity for web based posturing and body language.

Because many tweets, status updates and blog posts are fleeting and emotionally charged they give us insight into our friends, colleagues, role-models, and associates that can otherwise only be achieved via massive hours of time spent together. That’s valuable.

If we recognize the self indulgences of others as great opportunities to see where and how we can add value to those others and take the proverbial high road and use these media to reach out and provide beneficial insight, feedback and valuable input to others then we can actually use a stream of self indulgent Tweets or status postings to find how to be better friends, business associates, and citizens.

Essentially it’s a matter of perspective. If someone is truly only posting useless fluff updates and Tweets stop following them. but before you get so judgemental take a moment and look for a thread of truth in the emotion behind the Tweets, Statuses ( is that word?) then decide can I add value to this persons situation or the impact this Tweet, Status etc will have on others.

Have a bit of social responsibility with your social media use. remember the idea is to be a conversational media if you have someone you interact with that dosen’tunderstand that utilize your responses to make their fluff Tweets conversational then everybody wins.

If you are just now jumping on the Twitter bandwagon, or are intimidated by your inexperience with Twitter etiquette and acronyms, allow us to share some Twittery tips that will make your experience easier and more enjoyable.

1. Shrink Your URLs

One of the most common uses of Twitter is sharing links. But you only have 140 characters to work with, so instead of sharing a long URL, use one of several URL-shortening services to shrink that link. Some of our favorites include tinyurl.com, is.gd, ow.ly, and bit.ly.

2. RT = Retweet

If you want to copy and paste someone else’s tweet, that’s totally accepted and appreciated, as long as you give the original tweeter credit for it. Just put “RT @name” in front of their tweet and post it yourself.

3. Direct Messaging

With Twitter’s direct-messaging (DM) function, you can send a private 140-character message to another user, kind of like abbreviated e-mail. However, you can only direct message Twitter users that are following you.

4. Use the @ Sign

To create a reply or to give someone props on Twitter, simply place an @ sign in front of their Twitter name. If it is a reply, the @ sign must be the first character of the tweet. To see replies to your own tweets, click on @Replies from your profile page.

5. Search For Your Friends

Search.twitter.com works well for finding your friends, celebrities, or organizations, or for searching for specific topics you’re interested in.

6. Categorize Your Tweets for Added Visibility

If you’re tweeting about a popular subject (Obama, Lost, etc) putting a # in front of the subject makes it easy for others to find your tweet, and perhaps they will want to follow you. For example, when the plane crashed into the Hudson River in January, #flight1549 became a popular tag and search term.

7. Share Pictures

People love sharing their photos with the world, and some even break news with them, like Janis Krums, who used TwitPic to post one of the first up-close photos of Flight 1549 on his Twitter feed. Services like TwitPic let users easily upload their photos and post them directly to Twitter.

8. Tweet from Your Phone

Twitter allows you to update your status and receive updates via text message. Under Settings, go to the Devices tab and enter your phone number to start sending and receiving mobile tweets. If your incoming tweets/texts are overwhelming you, disable this option by going back to the same panel and following the instructions.

9. Pick a Good Desktop Client

With desktop clients such as TweetDeck, Twhirl, and TwitterFox, you can receive tweets in a much more manageable fashion, especially if you follow a lot of people, respond often, and use direct messages a lot. TweetDeck, for example, allows you to create specific groups, if you want to split your feed into individual columns.

10. Download a Mobile Client

If you have a BlackBerry, an iPhone, or another smartphone with Wi-Fi or 3G access, a mobile client might be a better option than using text messages. Mobile Twitter clients worth checking out include Twitterific, TwitterBerry, PocketTweets, and Twidroid.
